Campaigners hold pop-up event to help save historic Saffron Walden pub

11th September 2017

A campaign to save an historic Saffron Walden pub has entered a “critical stage” as members of the community are urged to make an offer to the current owners.

Save the Railway Arms Pub (STRAP) is fighting to stop the building, in Station Road, from being turned into housing and instead wants it to be become the town’s first-ever community-owned public house.

After months of work, the group is now at the stage where townsfolk can make an offer to the owners – something which must be done before the moratorium on the Asset of Community Value expires on November 8.

This was granted by Uttlesford District Council earlier this year, and meant that the owners had to inform the local authority if they wanted to sell the building.

Since then, much work has been done to try and save the pub.

STRAP is currently formulating a share issue, which, if approved by the government, will see investors able to claim tax relief of 30-50% on their investment.

Dave Kenny, chairman, said: “We’re planning to publish the Share Prospectus, backed by our comprehensive Business Plan on September 26 at the Town Hall and to launch the share issue at the same time.

“It will be a unique opportunity for the local community to save a prized community asset and to create sustainable, ongoing pub in the town.”

The group have also said that early birds to the share offer might be able to benefit from a higher level of tax relief, permitted by the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme, on the first £15,000 of share capital raised.

In wake of the recent news, STRAP will be holding a pop-up event at Fairycroft House, in Saffron Walden, on September 16.

The event will run from 4pm and is the third of its kind to take place at the venue.

As well as information about the campaign, there will also be live music and an open mic session with guest bands performing as well.
