Councillor calls for town’s fountain to be reinstated

09th February 2018

A councillor has proposed that a water fountain in Saffron Walden’s market square be reinstated and a policy introduced to provide water refill points in the town.

Councillor Mike Hibbs, Liberal Democrat councillor on Saffron Walden Town Council, put forward a motion proposing that the first water refill point should be the fountain in market square, followed by the fountain on the common.

He said other areas are to be identified, subject to sufficient funding and budget provision.

The town council noted that the provision for the reinstatement of water at the fountain in market square is currently being made and should be completed by April or May.

Cllr Hibbs said: “We are going to destroy our planet with plastic, and oceans in particular so we’ve got to do something about all the bottles we dispose of daily. If you can fill your water from a fountain, you don’t need to buy these bottles.

“I think it’s a service to people who want to be eco-friendly.”
